A QUICK LOOK

This groove is played by Stefan Kaufmann in the song “Fast as a Shark” by Accept. This double bass groove features accented backbeats or rim shots on every upbeat. Check it out at 0:27 in the recording.

BREAKING IT DOWN

Start by playing the open hi-hat pattern.

Then, add in the accented backbeats or rim shots.

Lastly, add in the double bass pattern.

BUILDING VOCABULARY

In this groove, you’ll play the floor tom in unison with every snare drum backbeat.

Dan Beehler plays this groove in Exciter’s “Violence & Force”. Notice how this groove is only played with a single bass drum pedal. This example also demonstrates the influence of hardcore punk music in speed metal. You can hear him play this groove in the song at 0:08.

Here’s a variation of the previous example with a different bass drum pattern.

In metal drumming, this beat is known as a “skank” beat. “Skank” beats simply alternate between the snare drum and bass drum. These beats are most commonly used in punk rock, hardcore punk, and thrash metal, but they also appear in many speed metal songs.

Mikkey Dee performs this double bass groove in the song “Burner” by Motörhead. You can hear him play it in the recording at 0:07.
